INTRODUCTION

Welcome to our new General Store!

This is the place for you to buy physical products and downloads of exclusive Coil material as well as other personal works of art, text and unique data.

We are commited to digital distribution via the Internet but will, at the same time, continue to make Special Editions of art projects and books, vinyl records, CDs, DVDs and so on, available for the collector via mail-order. Some of our material will continue to be available from some specialist retail outlets, though these are becoming increasingly hard to find.

From time to time this site will also host FREE downloads of concerts by Coil and other people, interviews, art projects and other special features.

THE MELANCHOLY MAD TENANT AND OPTIMO (ESCAPIO) - SLEEPWALK

The Melancholy Mad Tenant

Last remaining 25 copies -

Limited edition of 500 copies on 180 gram vinyl. Originally released on cassette in 1984 and then on cd in an edition of 500. The first 100 copies were on grey vinyl - we can't take requests for teh grey vinyl unfortunately.

In 1984 Vortex Campaign invited Coil and The New Blockaders to collaborate. The result, unofficially referred to as “Dolbied”, was released on cassette in an edition of 50. The release has since gone on to become legendary, showcasing two of the most influential groups in the scene at the early stages of their development. “The Melancholy Mad Tenant” is an authorised release, sanctioned by all three groups.

'Sleepwalk: A selection by Optimo (Espacio)

The Domino blurb pulls out such possible listening locations as "a psychedelic meadow, a hot air balloon or an autumnally damp West End in Glasgow." I'd be more inclined to plump for a dark corner of one's bedroom, at about 3am, with said listener just at that slightly disconcerting moment between asleep and awake. The soft, soothing sounds of Chris Watson's "No Man's Land", in reality nothing more than seagulls, the lapping of the sea and the rolling burbles of running water, drift in. A few minutes later, "Funeral Music For Perez Prado" washes over, the faint sounds of the seaside still lingering. Like the sounds that precede it, it's almost entirely ambient. Soft, mournful notes shimmer and fade, the listener left with a sense of emptiness. It's deceptively long, cruising past the six-minute mark without abandoning the simple, haunting theme that has served it so well for the previous 360-odd seconds. Like many mix CDs, this one should be heard in its entirety, from track one to track nineteen. While one or two snippets can stand up on their own, the mix generally takes the form (ironic choice of word considering the following words) of a sound collage, a slightly formless whole that soars, pulses and drops away.

THRESHOLD HOUSEBOYS CHOIR AMULET EDITION

This edition was manufactured to sell at the recent Brainwaves Festival in Boston. Only 200 copies were made, of which the copies Sleazy had with him sold out immediately. Thereafter a small number of signed and numbered copies were auctioned on ebay, some reaching prices in excess of £ 400!

The remaining 100 or so, unsigned, are for sale here for £ 65 each, including free airmail postage worldwide.

Sleazy describes the music as "Sketches towards the Soundtrack of a movie - yet to be made - about Thai Temple Tattooing".

For those unable to obtain this edition, the songs will re-appear (likely in a somewhat different form) when that is released, possibly late 2009 (As with "Form Becomes Rampant" the movie/cd package will not be limited).

This Edition is housed in brass and plastic Amulet case, within a black velour bag, and contains:

4 mini-cds of approximately 80 minutes TRT of new THBC recordings, some of which he played at the Festival (the first disc being the same as the one offered for sale recently in at THBC's two Russian shows) PLUS a laser etched OM sigil sticker, and track-listing card.

SALO, OR THE 120 DAYS OF SODOM DVD & BLU RAY

Without doubt, the two film-makers who influenced me the most as a teenager were Fellini and Pasolini. I saw Fellini-Satyricon at the age of about 15 in a cinema we used to call the “flea-pit” in Newcastle in the North of England, even though I was not technically old enough to get in. The combination of a kind of almost Buddhist Existentialism, with Decadence, Gay Desire and Sexuality, provided an irresistable romantic counterpoint to William Burrough’s rather gitty and “hard-boiled” vision of the world, that had recently set me free of any inherited middle class assumptions about my own sexuality and about the the world and reality itself

I think mostly because of his eye for the kind of boys I like best – small dark-eyed ruffians – I soon started to pay attention to Pasolini’s films also. At first he seemed kind of hung up in a Catholic way, and obsessed with Catholic imagery, but with the Arabian Nights, he suddenly revealed himself and his interests more nakedly, more honestly, it felt to me. This craving for honesty in any creative endevor remains at the centre of my work to this day. Certainly it was part of what TG, Coil and all my more recent work has been all about.

I already was quite familiar with the book of 120 Says of Sodom, when I heard it was to be Pasolini’s next (and final, as it turned out) film project. The paperback copy I owned was not very well bound and so already fell open at the pages featuring particularly gay (or “exclusively masculine” as de Sade called them) murders or tortures, as a consequence of my frequent re-readings – The pages didn’t actually stick together – I had too much respect for books in general to "spill my seed" onto the volume itself…

I feel weird to have the name of a genre of music named after my first label - Industrial – How weird must it be to have a whole category of Sexual Deviance from the "bell curve" , named after one, as de Sade did?

Obviously when I heard of Pasolini’s murder at the hands of a rent boy, just before the film came out, it became a poignant and confusing event, that made a big impression on my adolescent self.

When Salo finally did come out I saw it several times, with varying levels of cuts imposed. At first I was shocked to find the film so flagrantly un-pornographic, and emotionally involving in a genuinely GOOD way (unlike the Saw's and Hostel's of these days, despite the almost complete absence of close-up shots.

It was clearly a work of brilliance, unlike anything made before or since.

When Balance and I finally had free reign to explore all our obsessions as public works in Coil, it seemed natural to make the song “Ostia – The Death of Pasolini” about the murder...

This year when the British Film Institute asked me if there was a video for Osia they could include with the new Blu-Ray, Hi-def, fully uncensored edition of Salo, I was thrilled and said there wasn't, “but I’ll make you one…”

– To be on the same disc as Pasolini’s last & greatest work is a great honour for me.

THE APE OF NAPLES/THE NEW BACKWARDS- 4XLP BOX SET AND EXCLUSIVE CD

We are pleased to announced we finally have some copies of Important Records slip-cased 4 disc vinyl edition of The Ape of Naples. Renowned for publishing high quality limited editions, this Boxset was designed by Ian A Johnstone who also designed the cd version of The Ape of Naples.

Important Records themselves have already sold out and are pressing us for permission to work on a new vinyl release.

The few copies we have are the only still available new in the world. The first three discs are single sided with engravings sepecially designed by Ian Johnstone on the reverse side, and contain original audio of The Ape of Naples, here cut onto heavy quality vinyl.

A fourth double sided disc called The New Backwards, contains material with the same pedigree as The Ape - In other words tracks that were originally recorded at Trent Reznor's New Orleans studio in the 90s and held back at the time for some reason not immediately clear, though the original roughs were available on the Net for years since. These remaining tracks - the last remaining major unreleased work by Coil, yet unused on The Ape, were reworked in Bangkok last year by Peter Christoperson & Danny Hyde.

For the convenience of purchasers we are supplying a free "listening copy" of the cd edition with the vinyl boxset. This contains 3 additional tracks we could not fit on the 12" vinyl disc iof The New Backwards included with the boxset.

The cd version is also available as a separate item HERE, both as cd and download in various formats.

LIVE IN PORTO

We have obtained a small number copies of this unusual Coil live CD - an "authorised bootleg" - of an unusual show Coil played in Porto, Portugal on June 21st, 2003 at the Casa da Musica Festival. Coil for that show were Peter Christopherson, Thighpaulsandra & Ossian Brown (ie as with Mutek, in Montreal, Balance was too sick to attend, so the show has a one-of-a kind sound, inspired in part by the venue, which at that time was a half-completed shell of an extremely futuristic arts centre). These cds came in three variations of semi-transparent hand-made packaging. The run of each variation was quite limited and we believe these are the only new copies still available anywhere.

INTRODUCING THE THRESHOLD HOUSEBOYS CHOIR

Here it is - the first major release of the year from Threshold House. This time round it is not Coil but the Threshold HouseBoys Choir that demands your attention.

A CD/DVD combined effort - which means more haunting tracks for you to enjoy plus a documentary film for you to become engrossed in.

That's our bit - now do yours - order it now.

IN MEMORIAM

Finally, we did have some copies of the rare Russian cd "In Memoriam: Jhonn Balance - It Just Is" which was pressed for a show Sleazy played last Christmas in St. Petersburg. Amongst others, it featured tracks by Sleazy's new band The Threshold HouseBoys Choir and Thighpaulsandra (w/ Jhonn's vocals) - Unfortunately the cds are all totally out of print, but these tracks at least, are available as downloads here.

FEATURING JHONN...

We also have managed to obtain a small number of copies of the following excellent titles by our friends, featuring some of Jhonn Balance's last vocal performances:

PAYMENT METHODS

As well as accepting the standard forms of payment (Mastercard, Visa, Visa Delta, Switch and Maestro cards) we now accept payments via paypal. All of this is done from a secure server to make the transaction as safe as possible.

DIGITAL AUDIO FORMATS

We are offering tracks in a choice of mp3 or AAC format, and a trial run of the FLAC's for new releases.

AAC is the i-Tunes native compression format which delivers files of about the same size that in our opinion sound better than mp3.

FLAC encodes are superior in sound quality to mp3 and AAC. The audio is compressed without any loss in quality (similar to how zip works but with better compression for audio files). This makes FLAC's the highest possible quality for digital downloads. The file sizes are however on average roughly four times the size of the mp3/AAC versions.

For both AAC and FLAC - check that your playback device is compatable before ordering.

DIGITAL RIGHTS MANAGEMENT

For the moment no files from this site will have rights management or restriction.
Please do not take advantage of us by distributing files beyond your own use.

HOW DO OUR DOWNLOADS DIFFER FROM THE i-Tunes STORE ETC

At present we are only selling complete albums, rather than track-by-track (although the actual file downloads are one track at a time). Let us know if you would rather buy individual tracks.

Also we do not think the conventional 45 second audio preview of individual tracks will offer any real indication of the content of the album. Instead we will try to offer our own descriptions of sounds and ideas, as well as reviews by others as a more useful and user-friendly guide to prospective purchasers.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU PURCHASE A DOWNLOAD?

When you have completed the payment sequence you will be given links to initiate the download process of the tracks to your computer. Depending on your system, you may have to click on or select "save to disk" when asked. You will also receive an email with the same links. Should you want to make the actual downloads later in the day, follow the links in the email, log in with the username and password you already gave us, and you will get to the download area. If a download fails or is interrupted for any reason you can just try again - your personal copies of the files will be available on our server for 24 hours from the time you order.

As a courtesy to our customers, you will be able to make TWO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED downloads of each song (maybe you have computers at two locations or your connection at work is better than at home) but ONLY YOU are licensed to log in using your name and password. Please do not pass these details on to anyone else.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO DOWNLOAD?

On our 'cheapo' broadband connection at home, music files take about a third of their running time to download, depending on conditions, so an album lasting an hour takes about 20 minutes. Less time than the queue in Woolworths.

A 56k dial-up connection is approximately 10 times slower, so the same album might take 3 to 4 hours depending. Remember this is not one single download, but a series of smaller files of individual tracks, that can be more easily repeated if anything hiccups. Three to four hours downloading may seem like a long time, but on the other hand you'll have it today! If your connection is slower than 56k you might want to order the mail-order version!

WHAT IF I LOSE MY FILES?

We recommend the use of a program such as i-Tunes to manage, organise and play your files. i-Tunes simplifies the process of burning cds for your own use, as well as sharing with other computers and back up (though copies should be for your own use only).

COVER ART

As well as access to the audio files you can download a printable file of the cover. In the future we will also be instigating a PRINT STORE where high resolution files of the images from the covers can be obtained for larger print and display purposes.
